I cannot wait to see this movie – Bradley Cooper as Leonard Bernstein in Maestro! I was a big fan of Leonard Bernstein in high school and in college (Yes, I am a nerd). I bought many of these recordings, love West Side Story, On the Town, On the Waterfront and his classical compositions. His young people’s concerts were wonderful and in-depth, never abridging a work for a young audience.
Bradley Cooper looks and sounds just like him, so much that it is eerie! And that he wished to make a movie about this musical genius increased my admiration for Mr. Cooper to the umpteenth degree.
Bernstein composed his own classical compositions for the love of the genre, but he had his own, personal motive; he did not want to be remembered as a Broadway and Film composer. Bernstein felt that it would be second rate. Perhaps, he did not foresee that we would be singing and listening to his music, especially West Side Story, for decades and decades.
When Leonard Bernstein died and his funeral procession past through streets of Manhattan taking off their hats, even construction hats, and saying, “Thank you, Lenny”. Bernstein touched us all, regardless of class, status, income, race, color or religion.
